Railway People - James Rickards

Like the team he supports, James Rickards is glad he has joined an organisation which is top of the league.

The 26-year-old Manchester City fan is our Admin Assistant working at our head office in Darlington.

James is the person you are most likely to speak to if you telephone us, or pop in to the office.

As well as speaking to our residents and other members of the public, James also helps to input invoices, processes housing application forms and carries out a range of other administrative duties.

Before he came to Railway, James worked in a number of different roles, including being a trainee stonemason and a waiter at a five-star hotel.

He says: “I initially found stonemasonry interesting but making and fitting headstones for graves became a bit grim after a while.

“I enjoyed working at the hotel and became team leader, but the hours were very unsociable and by that time I was ready to start looking at a new career anyway.”

James got an insight into social housing whilst volunteering for a property company in County Durham so when he saw the advert for the role at Railway, he applied and was delighted to be successful.

He adds: “I really enjoy it here; I work with a nice bunch of people and the job is very interesting.

“I come into contact with lots of customers so it’s nice to be able to help them with their various enquiries and supporting the team internally here.”

When he is not working, James enjoys watching Manchester City (he’s a season ticket holder), spending time with his girlfriend and travelling.

He adds: “I proposed to my girlfriend in a restaurant in New York, so that’s one of my favourite places in the world."
